CD/DVD Formatting Problems
Hopefully someone can help before I go goofy.
I have an Inspiron 6000 about nine months old. It has a Sony DVD+-RW DW-Q58A recorder and Sonic Digital Media LE V7 (?) software which came bundled with the system.
I have been trying since I got the machine to full format CD-RWs with DLA with zero luck. Everything I try ends up with either the application hanging up or the receipt of a "Format failed due to General Failure" message. Quick formatting of CD-R discs works fine.
I contacted Sonic (which is a completely different experience) and updated the PX Engine, tried to find updates to the recorder firmware to no avail, disabled the start-up items in MSCONFIG, and read their documentation. Nothing has worked so far.
I have been using Memorex CD-RW 700 MB, 1X-4x speed discs.
I contacted Dell and was told they could do nothing. All they could suggest was using their Dell On Call Total Satisfaction Guarantee for a fee. I feel that since I have NEVER been able to format a CD-RW that it should be covered as a defect at time of delivery.
I'm afraid to even think about using DVDs.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks."

Before I did this, my Latitude had even gone as far as reformatting a CD-RW without so much as asking my permission - thank God it wasn't my only backup from my previous machine!
