Computer doesn't recognize optical drive

Have an Inspiron 2330 w/ Dell external dvd drive.  Used drive a number of times after getting cmptr a year ago.  But until recently, I haven't tried to use it.  Now cmptr doesn't recognize the drive.  In control panel it's identified as an "unknown device".  A diagnostic tool suggested a driver is the problem.

Between the time it worked and now, I upgraded Win8 to Win8.1.

    Hi Dell,

First some more info.  When I first encountered prblm, went to device mgr. and found the following info when viewing properties for  'other devices\unknown device'':   "Drivers not installed. (code 28).   The installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance."  Selected Driver Update got following: " Windows found driver software for your device but encountered  an error while attempting to install it.  The driver installation for this file is missing a necessary entry.  ... may be because INF was written for Windows 95 or later."

Followed resolutions 1, 2 & 4 without any positive result;  Res 3 was taken care of by Res 1 - automatic Fixit steps removed upper & lower filters in registry.  Not being familiar with registry, i'm uncomfortable trying to change it.

I got drive 1 yr ago along with cmptr.  Dell has already sent me a replacement but no change . Drive is a Dell product and I don't know who's manufacturer; only that it was made in China.  I don't know how to find driver so i can reinstall it.

    Thanks for your help,

    jim

    Hi Jim,

Follow the solution described in this thread.

That should do the trick. This is not a driver problem but a registry issue. The same generic driver is used for all optical drives under Windows.
