DEAD COMPUTER

Hello,
I am replacing a hard drive and reinstalling windows and now it gets stuck at the startup screen. It gives me the option for F1 to reboot and F2 system utility. I tried both two drives to see if either worked. I got it to format once, but upon installing windows, it said it couldn't locate a drive. PLEASE HELP. Thanks.

Does it show a message other than "F1 to reboot and F2 system utility"? If you hit F2 and go into setup, is the hard drive shown, or does it appear as an unknown device?

it appears as unknown device... i've tried two different drives, so i know the drives are ok, also, i've formatted each via windows install disc and it found them and reformatted, but then upon further installation of xp, no disc could be found.

If it shows as an unknown device, you just might have a dead HDD on your hands. Perhaps try reseating the cables to the HDD, although i doubt this will make a difference. Try running the dell diags on the hdd, this will identify whether the hdd is faulty or not.
