Dimension 3000 hard disk drive

Hi! I really hope someone can help me. I have a Dimension 3000. My son used the open disk tray as a step. Now I cannot use the drive. The tray was not broken, but after it was pushed back in, that was it. The power light does't even come on.When you push the open/close button, it makes noise but doesn't open. It's like you're holding it shut. Any suggestions for a frustrated mom?::womanmad:

    Hi Frustrated Mom,

It possible something internal is broken. Let try a couple of things we would do for a "jammed" tray.
Please click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 13-0, article 22 and see if any of these 4 approaches will help.

    Best Regards!

    Thank you for responding.
1.Used emergency eject button. Tray now opens, but still doesn't work.
    2. Uninstall/reinstall primary and secondary IDE  (Sony CD-RW/DVD-ROM CRX330E). No good
    3. Reseated cables to drives. Now upon start-up, I get a black screen with:

    Dimension 3000 series
    BIOS version A02
    primary drive 1 not found
    secondary drive 1 not found
F1 to continue  F2 to run setup utility

    HELP!!!!!!!!!:womansurprised:

    Hi Frustrated Mom,

(With system off) Open the case and check the cable connection for you hard drive. It is possible you may have nudged it without knowing, causing a loose connection.
If you still get a Black screen, open the case again and disconnect the IDE cable and the power cable from the optical drive, turn the system back on.
Does the system boot normally now?

    Best Regards!

    Hi Frustrated Mom,

For some reason, I cannot get Dell`s link to their Manual page to open.
If you can or have your Service Manual available, enter the BIOS/System setup and verify that the drives are turned on, save/exit.
I am very surprised, uninstalling the IDE controller in the past has never caused this issue, normally once you restart the system, Windows will automatically detect and install the proper drivers.

    Best Regards!

Have you opened the case and checked if the hard drive's power and data cables to both the motherboard and drive, are properly connected, by unplugging and reconnecting them?

Is the data cable to the damaged CD/ROM disconnected?

    See here for more information.

Is the hard drive recognized in the System Setup?

What is the reading of the power button LED, green, blinking green, solid amber, blinking amber?

Check the sequence of the diagnostic lights on the back panel of the case.

    Bev.

Thank you for responding. I somehow wiped out the LAN on my system and had to have it repaired. ouch! I'm just going to get a new disk drive before I kill anything else. By the way, all lights ABCD are green. Thank you for the help, but obviously I don't don't know how to follow directions! If I have any ?'s in the future, I will not hesitate to post.
