disk error

New to this forum and looking for help..although I think I already know the answer based on what I have seen here.  My wife was working on our pc the other day and she got the blue screen of death with the error message can't write to c:drive. Since then the ScanDisk starts up everytime I boot up the computer, whether I shut it down correctly or not.  I have run all the diagnostics and defragged the hard drive and suddenly the ScanDisk is picking up an error on the disk. I tell it to fix it but it just sits there and runs and runs and gives me the same message about every 2 minutes. The scan doesn't seem to progress any farther.  I have uninstalled most unused programs and backed all files up, but I am wondering if it would be worth trying to reformat the hard drive or if is sounds like it is going bad.  I can still use the computer, but it runs fairly slow and sometimes takes 4 or 5 tries to boot up.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

The drive is failing.  Back up your data immediately and replace it.

Thanks. I was afraid I would hear that as last night I was going to try and back up the data (most is already done except for over the last week or so) and I now can't even get to Windows.  I just get the blue screen of death and that's it.  Scandisk in safe mode is trying to fix it and move data to different clusters, but as of last night it was 43% done and found over 50 bad clusters.  Not good!!
