Was this drive previously used with W95 or W98 and a FAT16 format and perhaps even compressed? You will probably have to delete the partitions with Fdisk and start over to create a FAT32  Formatted partition for W98 or leave it bare for the W-XP CD which will partition and format a drive NTFS. There may be a smallish NonDOS partition on the drive, which is your Save to Disk Partition. DO NOT delete that for either scenario. How big a drive does your 7000 have at present? You should be aware that W-XP will eat up 1.5gb and a smallish drive is not going to cut it. Even W98 with a few Business applications or word processor can use up a 4gb(?) drive in a hurry.

I tried the fdisk command at the DOS prompt. That is I put in the Boot floppy in the floopy drive and gave the following command A:>Fdisk c:

It stiill returns the same error.

Do I have the command line wrong??OR do I need to try it fom Windows.??

My HDD is  @9.5GB

 

when trying to use fdisk at the A: prompt just type fdisk & then hit enter.
do say yes to large disk support. from fdisk you'll be able to delete & repartition if so desired.

I did eventually manage to format the HDD successfully , remove all the junk & reload all the driver files & the OS.Thanks a ton all for all the advice.

I however have a new & hopefully a samall problem here  now....

After I have loaded the driver files for the External HDD connected through a USB2.0 port of  the notebook or though a USB2.0 PC Card (Billington) , the HDD is somehow not recognised.

What can be done to sort this out.

I don't know about your card, but the 7000 had USB1.0 and it will probably not work with USB 2.0 Devices.
