Hard Drive issue or Memory?

I have a dell deminsion 4100 and I cannot figure out what is wrong with it.  The video card quit working and I took it out of its spot and put it back and it started working again somewhat.  Everything is slow and my computer is not recognising my cd drive at times, and there is no communication between my printer and the computer.  It says error writing to LPT1.  Okay, so it gets worse. I ran scan disc, did defrag, and ran my nortons system works, went thru the paces making sure the driver was installed which was a trip because the computer isnt recognizing my cd.. I had 58 lost clusters in 4 chains and all this except for the video card issue occured after fdisk and reinstalling. And I keep getting system busy messages and others as well?  So the question is this.  Is this a hard drive starting to fail or is this a memory issue.  I have one month left on my warranty from dell, so any help is appreciated.

    grandmamoose,

Thanks for using the Dell Community Forum.

I don't think this is related to the memory.  Also, it doesn't mean automatically that the issue is the drive.  It could be corrupt software or another hardware device.  You should probably contact Technical Support and doing some basic troubleshooting to determine what is going on.

if using windows xp, restore to an earlier date and see if that helps. if not, i would start by doing a re-format and system install, see if that helps. if it doesn,t , might be hardware, possibly psu unit. make sure the power supply to the motherboard fits correctly.

also, when doing a defragmentation, disable screensaver and virus programs, they can cause problems during the defragmentation.
