hard drive not being recognized

dell latiude C600/D500
hard drive is not being recognized. how do i know if it is dead or not. when i check bios is has none for hard drive and when it boots up it says primary hard drive not found. then no bootable device available.
if i need to replace with upgraded hard drive. what is the most capacity i could get for this,
it is very frustrating. i am on a budget so i need to know what  are my options.

First off, I would try to re-seat the hard drive and see if that makes the drive work.
Here's the link that will show you how to remove the drive.

If that doesn't work, you can test the drive, but your options will be limited. You could buy an USB drive enclosure, or have a computer store in your area test it for you. If your running Windows XP, you can replace the hard drive with any size you want, but I would stay at or under 80GB. Notebook drives are expensive. I would stay away from 7200RPM drives. Your laptop may not be able to handle the heat.
A good place to look for a replacement drive is www.newegg.com
