Hey, i'm new to this forum and quite new when it comes to adding stuff to your
computer.
I have this problem with my new harddrive. It's a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 plus 200GB S-ATA harddisk. I've added it in my computer, connected the wires etc. All wires ARE working, so no probs there. Then I rebooted my computer and found out that he didnt recognize it whatsoever, hard disk was running so it aint a faulty harddisk. Went to computer management>diskmanagement. The new Harddrive wasnt there. So no options to partition my new drive. So i called the store where i bought it, they said i should check my bios to see if my 2nd S-ATA port was enabled. Well, it wasnt, it was off. However, i couldnt turn it on, it said N/A. I'm at a loss what to do now, the store said they couldnt help me with my BIOS, so i'm hoping someone can help me here?:)
My computer:
Dell 4600
GenuineIntel Family 15 Model 3 3.0 GHz Stepping 3 (2 CPUs)
dont know the chipset exactly, was a INTEL 865
512MB Ram
120 GB S-ATA Harddrive
BIOS: DELL - 7 Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A09, 02/20/04
Clear the NVRAM (go into CMOS setup, illuminate num, caps and scroll lock, press Alt-E until you hear a tone); restart.
Check the cables - make sure the data cable is properly connected to the drive and mainboard. Likewise, check the power connector - if the drive doesn't have a MOlex connector, make sure the power converter is seated firmly.
If the drive still isn't found, return it - it could be DOA (which isn't that uncommon for Maxtor these days).
However, 2 days ago i had exactly the same problem with a normal Maxtor 200GB ATA133-drive. The store said that maybe my installed Seagate Barracuda S-ATA 120GB and the ATA133 couldnt work together or something, so i changed it with a Maxtor 200GB SATA-drive at the store. But what are the chances of getting two bad Maxtor hard drives with the same problem.
I really think it's my BIOS,sytem config or whatever.
Dont know how I can do this :( Can you please explain me step by step how i can do this? Like what is NVRAM? How can I clear it? How can i enter CMOS? and why do i have to illuminate caps, scroll and num?
Well, i've just booted my computer from DOS with a diagnostic tool from Maxtor(powermax). Strangely enough my harddrive WAS recognized on the second S-ATA port. Did all kinds of tests on it, power lines, connection etc. All tests were passed. So the drive is good, it just isnt working in windows. This is really getting terrible. I've spent up to 6 hours now on this stupid thing. Anyway, maybe it's my bios or something? Dont know what else it could be.
PS. Btw. thnx for your quick help everytime, truly appreciate it.
Well, by now i have installed a new bios (DELL - 7 Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A12, 08/26/04), i installed a new update for my Intel chipset. Rechecked my bios to see if i can enable the 2nd S-ATA port, which wasn't possible. Send an email to maxtor, and now i've lost about 8hours on this thing. Still aint working. And if i cant find a possible solution before monday i'm gonna return the HD.
The numbering of the sata ports is a bit odd, they start with zero(0), also the layout on the board is numbered bassackwards so I think you are trying to enable the wrong port. Try to enable each sata port until you get the right one.
