I am having a problem with my 8400 and they are shipping me another 250 BD drive for my RAID configuration. Two questions. Since I am starting from scratch, which is the best RAID 0 or 1 to insure continuity of processing? And second, when trying to install Windows XP, I got the message that my disk configuration was bad. Where can I get documentation which will show me how to configure either RAID 0 or RAID 1?
I assume you had RAID 0 or you would not have an issue on having to re-build.
Anyway you should have RAID 1 if you want the ability to recover from a disk crash. Since RAID 1 is mirror you can continue on working, replace the drive and re-build the RAID all without loosing anything on the RAID.
To get the system to reconize your drive when you have the BIOS set for RAID you will need a floopy drive and load a driver shortly after boot up off the OS CD. To create the diskette you need to execute the Pre-OS RAID Driver that can be downloaded from Dell for your 9100. To load the Driver you press F6 shortly after boot up off the OS CD and then install the diskette you created earlier.
You can break your existing RAID configuration by pressing CTR I shortly after power on and break the array. Unless you have RAID 1 then you should just rebuild the current array.
On RAID 1 setup I would just load up DISK SATA Port 0 with with the OS etc, and then migrate to RAID 1 using the Intel Application Accelerator that you can also download from the Dell site for you 9100.
A re-install guide may be availble from Dell on exactly the steps to install the OS.
