Please insert CD.....

Problem 1:
While trying to burn a CD, I got this message: "Please insert the CD into the Drive."
There already was a blank recordable CD in it. I tried whatever I could even Dell Tech Support helped but all in vain. Finally I was told that "your OS (XP) has been corrupted and now needs to be restored." While I understand that there might be some probem with the OS [that's why I wanted to save my DATA onto a CD....] but I don't think my CD problem is because of corrupt OS. I would have sacrificed my data loss for System Restore but I saw this forum and thought to give it a try. Hoping to have someone solve this problem without restoring OS.

Problem 2:
DVD can't be played on DVD ROM. It opens the player but when I click run/show movie and I get error message "An error has occurred abc (programs' name real player, media player, dell media player etc.) will be closed.... Send Data    ...... Don't Send Data...
Note that CDs can be played without any problem. It is just DVD. I tried three different ones but without success. No it was not a region code ..... problem.
Any help would really be appreciated
Thanks

    Hi Ghalib,

P1): Before going any farther, may I ask what is the name/model of your drive(s)?

P2): Have you tried uninstalling / reinstalling your decoding software? Dell has been shipping PowerDVD.

    Best Regards

    Models are as follows:
    HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8487B
    HL-DT-ST- DVD-ROM GDR8163B

No I haven't uninstalled PowerDVD yet as I don't have a Software CD to reinstall it. Shouldn't Dell Tech Support offerred this option to me?

One important thing I forgot to mention in my original post was that mine is a Dimension 3000 running on XP Home Edition.

To me both Dell Tech Support and this Forum are all the same. They don't Solve the problem. Disappointing service by both of them.

    Ghalib,

This forum is Dell`s however 99% of the help comes from peer to peer support, volunteers.
I am sorry I was not able to get back to you sooner but my time has been limited with more pressing, personal matters for the last week.

The reason I asked about the drives was to check for possible firmware updates, unfortunately there are none for either drive. Dell due to their marketing scheme, stopped shipping the CD`s with some of the systems. You will have to to contact Dell and request all of them, nothing any of us here can do about that.

The insert disc message has been difficult to address because there is no one answer that solves the problem for everyone.
The steps that have worked for "some" are as follows:
Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3; Section 11, article 2.
Someone mentioned re-installing the Intel Chipset drivers, jumping over to Intel and installing the IAA; Deleting the Upper & Lower Filters (same CD/RW link, Section 12, article 10).
Others had one bad drive which seemed to effect both, thus you will have to test each drive as the device on the IDE cable. Some found a loose IDE connection, simply reseating the IDE cable from the motherboard to the back of the drives corrected their problem. Finally they either used Dell`s PC Restore or a Clean re-install of XP.
This is about all I have.

    Best Regards

Hello, Thank you very much for your advice. I, however, have already tried the solution you gave here except reinstalling XP. One thing is that CD RW drive is not even reading any CD....

If you have the means, before re-installing the OS, test the CD/RW in another system. If it does not work there, then one should lean heavy on the side of a bad drive. If it works, then the last two things to try is a new IDE cable and/or reinstall the OS.

    Best of luck,

    Jeff

So impatient was I today that I asked Dell Tech. Support to do whatever they want to fix my CD burner. As expected, I was offered to run OS Restore. I asked the Tech Support if this would solve the problem for sure? What if it doesn't? I was told that in most cases it solves the problem(s) and if it doesn't then we will ship new hardware (burner)!! I had  Data which I wanted to save but I sacrificed for the sake of the CD burner. In the next 10-12 minutes, my computer was back to its original condition as it was shipped. I first tested DVD ROM. Power DVD played the DVD this time without any problem. Good job Dell!!! But wait a minute. It wasn't a great job as the CD burner was still unable to  read  CD. Needless to say that when I tried to burn a CD, it prompted the same old message (before the Restore was run):

Please insert a blank recordable CD.........

At last, Dell Tech Support Expert said that he would ship a new CD burner!!

Then there was a lengthy conservation about Dell's service!! One can easily guess what would be my answer?
