My dvd / cd drive works fine when writting a DVD but fails every time with a CD. I have spoken to customer support but unfortunatly it was an Indian lady on a very quiet line (think she was in India). To make matters worse she could not understand me, nor I her. Every sentence was repeated twice and after about an hour of this we had got nowhere. I do not thing she knew much about computers and you could tell she was just reading from a manual. I gave up in the end.
Any way back to the problem. Every time I try to creat an audio CD, It starts of fine but after a few minutes writing to disc the drive spits the disc out and the message on screen says 'problem with the disc, insert another one and try again'. It does this every time. I really want to speak to customer services about this but cannot summon up the enthusiasm.
Any Ideas what to do? I am getting desperate on this as my guarantee runs out in three months.
This sounds like the same issue we have been seeing with the 4164B drive. May I ask, what is the name/model of the drive.
Best Regards!

Lets see if we can use Device Manager for the information:
To access Device Manager, use any of the following methods:
• Click Start, click Run, and then type devmgmt.msc.
• Right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager.
• Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
I was afraid it might be that drive. Dell is dealing with this on a case bye case issue. Here is the last firmware update, 4164B just below the Download, you will see "Other Versions", click that link and apply the first firmware update. If it does not help, then try the latest one as well. If neither one helps, do not beat head against a wall, call Dell. Tell them that you tried both firmware updates and drive does not work correctly.
Good luck...
Best Regards!

Firmware did not work so I took your advice and called Dell. They are sending me a new drive which I should have by next Tuesday so in the end I have a result. It took me about an hour on the phone to get there though!! but it was worth it.
