Question about Intel Matrix Storage Manager
Hi. I have an XPS 400. I have a 160g hard drive, and a second 300g hard drive for storage, etc.
I'm a bit confused about the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Application and the Driver.
I'm not running in RAID configuration, and have no desire to do so.
My question is, do I need it?
The read me says the folowing:
- 'Intel(R) 82801GR SATA AHCI Controller'
If the controller above is present, the system is an
ICH7R system in AHCI mode and no further action is required.
If the controller above is present, the system is an

- 'Intel(R) 82801GH SATA AHCI Controller'

Checking my system, my controller is listed as:
'Intel(R) 82801GR/GH SATA AHCI Controller'
The read me also says:
If you are installing the operating system on a system
configured for RAID or AHCI mode, you must pre-install
the Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager driver using the
F6 installation method described in section 5.3.

So, do I need this (driver and application)? I'm confused as the read me seems to say yes and no. LOL

Thanks for the reply. My question is for when I reformat/reinstall Windows.
The weird thing is I didn't pre-install the driver, but was able to install the application.
I have a new sound card and media card reader on the way, and I'll be formatting/reinstalling Windows when they get here.
So, I'm still not sure if I need either one.

I understand the drivers may be on XP SP2, so it may have been installed automatically for you. One think to keep in mind if you re-format you system you loose the recovery partition that dell installs that allows you to get back to the orginal system.
You should be able to install the sound card and Media reader without re-installing windows.
Keep in mind you have to install the Chip set driver, first then go ahead and install the other drivers sound card, video, network etc. The last step would be the the Intel Storage Manager. And may want to visit windows update and get all the critical fixes etc.
I think there may be a Re-install guide available on-line so that may help.

I would leave it there. What it does is allow you to migrate your system to RAID 1 or 0, by adding another drive that matches one of your 2 drives. If you ever re-load you system, you need to install the Pre-OS RAID driver, otherwise you can not install the Intel Storage Manager. At least that the way it works on my XPS gen2.
