Decommision

hi all,

I have server to be decommissioned. the storage is provisioned from Symmetrix, What would be the stand for that, I was reviewing the some of the changes. I got confused in some cases before unmapping the devices were write protected but in some case its not there? Is it required that when we reclaim the storage the host should be shutdown. so what about fabric can we remove the zones and do the reclaim? with servers on-line.

it's pretty much generic process for *nix flavors, on Windows you remove drive letter in Disk Management and proceed with PowerPath step.

if server is being completely decommissioned, i would unmount devices, remove devices from volume group (if Volume manager is in use), unmask devices, make devices write disable and unmap them. Remove zones from both fabric and activate active zone set. The host can be up while you doing this ..should not matter since you are shutting it down anyway.

Don't forget things like dissolving metas, removing BCV pairings and SRDF relationships too, if appropriate.

Also on some OS (such as HP/UX) you will have to do specific actions to clean up the kernel.

On HP/UX, LUNs that have been removed will show up as "NO_HW" (no hardware) after an ioscan. This can be cleaned up using the rmsf command.

On Solaris, if you use the SD driver, you will want to remove the LUNs from the persistent binding file (sd.conf?).

I have used AIX for years but never with SAN disks. However, I would be surprised if the ODM doesn't need cleaning up afterwards.

Also, Powerpath will complain about LUNs it no longer sees and this should be cleaned up too.

Is there a way to see which LUNS are in use with the sd.conf file?
I have a few servers and they contain a lot of lines of every possible lun addresses.
