I have a question regarding deallocating a few devices from a Symmetrix which are being accessed by a Linux Host running PowerPath.

To be on the safer side, we suggested that first the devices should be removed from PowerPath and then we can go ahead and do the deallocation.

But the System Admin states that it will not be a clean removal because the /dev/sd* devices will still be visible and the system could start login a lot of bogus i/o errors. The cleanest way to do this is to clean up /dev/ but if the Luns are still visible by the HBA they get added back.

Is this correct ?

In past, in other organizations I have worked for, removing devices from PowerPath first was the safest way to go so that the Sys Admins would know if they removed the wrong devices.

I will really be thankful if someone could reply on this.
