Wondering if anybody has seen this. I am having troubles using the posted VMAX WWN decoding algorithm (to serial number and back) with some new Symmetrix ID/numbers I have seen.
For instance, the serial number "492600024". If you use the encoding tool, you get a WWN of 5000097808006198 for directory 7g port 0.
However, if you follow the support ticket that explicitly says the "49" field of bits should be either 19 or 26 (at least the way I read it). Further it states that "bit 35" of the WWN should alwasy be 0, which would make creating the WWN above impossible (no way to get hex '8' in the byte after '5000097').
I am wondering if there is a new algorithm or list of possible values. Anybody else seen similar?
For Symmetrix VMAX director ports, the WWN breakdown is shown below:
The director port WWN (50000972081349AD) can be broken down (in binary) as follows:
First 28 bits (from the left, bits 63-36, binary) of the WWN are assigned by IEEE. (5000097 is the vender UID of Symmetrix V-Max.)
5000097 2 0 8 1 3 4 9 A D
0010 0000 1000 0001 0011 0100 1001 1010 1101
Bit 35 is reserved and is set to 0. If Bit 34 and 33 are set to 01, then the Symmetrix is made in the USA and the Serial Number of the Symmetrix will start as HK19. If Bit 34 and 33 are set to 10, then the Symmetrix is made in Ireland and the Serial Number of the Symmetrix will start as CK29. In the example, bit 34 and 33 are set to 01, so this is a USA made Symmetrix and the Serial Number will start as HK19.
Bit 32 is reserved and is set to 0. For bits 31 through 27, if only bit 27 is set to 1, then the next 2 digits of the Symmetrix Serial Number will be 26, which denotes a regular V-Max model. If only bits 31 and 30 are set to 1 between bits 31 through 27, then the next 2 digits of the Symmetrix Serial Number will be 49, which denotes a V-Max SE model. In the example, there is a breakdown of 26, so the Symmetrix Serial Number decodes so far to HK1926.
Bits 26 through 10 encode the last 5 digits of the Symmetrix Serial Number. Take those bits and place them into a scientific calculator set to binary, convert the binary into decimal, and you will receive the last 5 digits of the Symmetrix Serial Number. In the example, bits 26 through 10 come out to be 000 0001 0011 0100 10. Placing this into a calculator and converting from binary to decimal yields 1234. If the yield comes out to be a 4-digit number, front pad the number with a 0 to make 5 digits (i.e., 01234). The full Serial Number for the Symmetrix now is HK192601234.

In the string above - Does the counting start from 0 and end at 63? Just to make sure - Binary # "0010" under the number Hex # 2, are bits 28, 29,30 and 31, correct? Just trying to correlate the numbers. I am trying to find bit 33 and 34 which indicate the EMC Manufacturing site (01 in the example) and I am not sure that I identified the correct digits.
