DriveCleaner

I'm not sure if I put this in the right section.  A few days ago I received a message on my computer stating that I should download and install DriveCleaner.  Not knowing what it was I looked it up and found that it was a virus.  I searched my computer and found no record of it in any of my files or anything.  I'm not sure how it got there, but the message keeps popping up.
I know this has been discussed before, but I'm relatively new to having to deal with these types of problems.  When I read some of the other postings they were confusing!  If anyone can help me, I would definitely appreciate it.

Thank you in advance.

DriveCleaner is a rogue program, which is often "connected" with a Vundo infection (the Vundo trojan can cause the popups).   Both RogueRemover as well as SuperAntiSpyware claim they can remove DriveCleaner.   If you wish, you could try these (links below)... be advised that a complete SuperAntiSpyware scan can run 20 to 40 minutes.  Be sure to let us know which one, if either, worked for you.

    ====================================================

If these attempts don't succeed --- or even if they do, but you'd like further confirmation that you're fully clean --- then you can post a HiJackThis log in the HJT forum, where the helpers can offer you personalized assistance --- please do NOT try to proceed with HJT "fixes" on your own!

Here's the information on HiJackThis, in case you decide to pursue it:

Download a self-extracting copy of the latest version of HJT (HiJackThis) (version 1.99.1) from
    Save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the file    hijackthis_sfx.exe    file, and allow it to self-extract [by clicking on UnZip] into the suggested/default folder,
    C:\Program Files\HijackThis

Use Windows Explorer to navigate your way into this folder, and then double click on HiJackThis. exe

Click on  Do a System Scan and Save a LogFile

    This will automatically open NotePad

Copy the entire file from NotePad:  EDIT/SelectAll, EDIT/Copy

Then go to the forum dedicated for HiJack This logs (**NOT** back here), and  PASTE the results there:

    http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board?board.id=si_hijack

Be sure to include a detailed description of any problems/errors/warnings you are encountering.

Hopefully, one of the HJT experts will get to it as quickly as possible.

WARNING:  HiJack This is a VERY POWERFUL tool.  While it's  completely safe  for you to download, generate, and post your log (as described above), you should *NOT* attempt to do anything else (in particular, do NOT use it to delete/fix any entries) until you are advised to do so by a forum expert!!   Improper use of this tool can severely damage your system.

I see where you successfully generated and posted your HJT log.   Good work there.
Please be patient... the helpers in that forum are often overburdened, but will get back to you at their earliest convenience.   Do not try to fix anything till someone replies to that thread.

just out of curiosity, you wrote:   " they had me download SUPERAntiSpyware to scan my computer.  I scanned it and the scan came up with a lot of harmful files. "   Did this have any impact on your DriveCleaner popups??   Or are you still getting them??

AFTER someone replies to your HJT thread, you should let them know whether or not you're still experiencing the drivecleaner popups.  It might also help them if you let them know what harmful files (other than cookies) superantispyware found [if you still have a list].   But WAIT until a helper responds there... do NOT be the first person to reply to your own HJT thread.

Thank you very much for your help.  I do still have the list from the scan; I thought it would be wise to write it down.  Once again thank you very much for recommending those scanners.  I hadn't realized what was actually on my computer until I did.

You need a rootkit remover(just google), Vundofix,  Virtumundobegone and i used Evidence eliminator(not sure if i needed it).Trust me its one of the hardest popups to delete of your system
Some of the better known trojan removers and anti spyware program's like spybot search and destroy and norton don't do jack .

Its also a good idea to run spydoctor for free off the google homepage "extra's" link> But don't let it run in the background ....it hogs resources.Just do i scan and clean then run other trojan remover scan programmes that i suggested.

TRADECELL, thank you for your input, but lessien's problem has been resolved.

SpyDoctor is mentioned on the list of Rogue Products. I would not advise anyone to use anything on that list.

Evidence Elimator does not have such a good history and is not free:
    http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/evidence-eliminator/
    http://www.pc-help.org/opinion/eeemail.htm

There are free tools available that will do the job.
