everytime I start my computer I get a Windows Installer box that says preapring to install (install what???) and then it changes to MS Office Basuc and says configuring MS basic office. A status bar appears and then an error message 1933. I do not know what these boxes are for and why they keep coming up. This problem started at the same time as slow internet problems and changed search pages. I learned about spyware and installed adware and spybot which founf over 100 problems and cleaned them up. But I am still having problems with with home page on IE and search page on AOL. As well as this annoying windows installer box. Speed has improved, back to normal (using cable modem)
ANy help greatly appreciated, I am not that knowledgeable.
Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. Unzip HijackThis into this folder.
(See this link for graphical instructions) Then run, scan, save log, then in notepad copy the FULL log by copy and paste as a reply to this post and an expert with HijackThis Knowldge, will have a go at giving advice. A lot of posters make mistakes here in copying and pasting so reread the left info sidebar called

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING WITH HIJACKTHIS WITHOUT EXPERT ADVICE, most of what it finds you need for normal MS Windows tasks.

As I said earlier I only learned about spyware a couple of days ago and I did install and run spybot and ad aware. The first tiem I ran spybot it found and cleaned over 100 problems. I uninstalled Kazaa which I believe was the cause of the spyware (problems seemed to coincide with my daughters downliading songs) However I still have problems with spyware and popups, I ran spybot again this am and it found 12 problems. Is it common to have spyware everyday and have to run spybot everyday??
ANyone see anything on the hijack log I posted? Still getting the windows installer box popping up.
Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT. You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary. Please delete the old copy (including the zip copy) so it can't be used. ====================== Check these in hijackthis, AND WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, fix checked.
The following have randomly named file names, and as such are normally malware, UNLESS you know what they are, and they are from a safe source, please check for removal.
Then Reboot to safe mode (F8 on boot) and delete the following files/folders:- NOTE: To avoid the risk of any of the above not being found due to them having the 'Hidden' attribute, first make sure that in Folder Options > View hidden and operating system files are set to show: How to Show Hidden/System Files : http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Folder > C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\ Folder > C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ File > > C:\WINDOWS\System32\IEHost.exe Folder > C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\ And these if checked above File > > C:\WINDOWS\System32\idctup20.exe File > > C:\documents and settings\billy\local settings\temp\hF2.exe File > > C:\documents and settings\billy\local settings\temp\CzzXr7Z.exe File > > C:\WINDOWS\System32\rtisel.exe
I was able to "fix checked" on the hijack log but you lost me on the "reboot to safe mode" and deleting the files and folders. I was able to unhide the folders but I don't know how to find the folders you say to delete such as the sysytem P2P networking etc. Can you give me step by step instructions?
That will open 'Windows Explorer' - This is the file manager system for windows.
It has two 'panes' in the window - the left showing the drives & folder, the right showing the files (or subfolders) in the current active folder from the left pane.
Find in the left pane the folder you have the file in (click to select it), then in the right pane find the file you wish to delete (or copy or anything else).
Right click the file, and choose delete from the little menu. That should delete the file.
Repeat untill all those that you need to delete are done.
If you need to delete a folder do the same but right click on the folder (in left or right pane) and choose delete.

Please post back with a new hijackthis log, after a reboot.
I think I was able to so what you said to do. I have run spybot several times since Friday and after finding and fixing over 100 problems the first time I ran it it stil continues to find a few problems every time I run it. Here is the new HJT log

Reboot in normal mode Windows and run Disk Cleaner: type cleanmgr at Start/Run. Scan all hard drives and check all categories at the end and click OK.
Besides Spybot I would suggest you run Adaware as it catches things not detected by Spybot and will help clean up debris from the MyWay Speedbar.
Chris has posted an excellent tutorial by dgosling on how to run Spybot S&D and also how to enable customized deep scanning functions for Adaware. Once you set these options they will be retained for future scans by Adaware.
Follow the directions in this detailed guide for Spybot and Adaware...go slow on the directions for the custom setup of Adaware:
Browse a bit and run a fresh Hijackthis log and post it here for us to look at. Report any issues or comments.
After the final all clear is given by us you should flush your Restore Points for XP. That means disabling the Restore Point, rebooting to flush it, then re-enabling a new Restore Point. The reason why we need to do this is to purge the bad files hidden in System Restore which can't be cleaned by your antivirus programs.
If you can't get Hijackthis by download, click on my name above the Duck icon on the left of this page - and use the email link to send an email to me - I will reply with a copy of the file for your use.
I did what you said...I think. However when I tried to download HJT I got bombarded with numereous spyware popups to the point where my computer froze and I had to reboot. The same thing happened when I went back and tried to look at the link you sent with "the new fix by Chris". So I rebooted again and ran Spybot s & D and Adawae both of which found numerous problems which were fixed. AFter that, feeling totally dejected, demoralized and totally teed off I went to bed. I am now at work, will try to send a HJT log when I get home. It is pretty bad when you would rather be at work than at home messing with the computer.
It did occur to me tho that the spectrum of people in this world range from those that develop things like spyware on one end (the lowest of the low)to those people like you, Chris and the others who spend their time trying to help poor clueless people like myself. Thanks.
