Winfixer

Please Help! Microsoft Antispyware detects this problem as Trojan.Downloader.BHO.Req but can't remove it. Avast, McAfee, & PC-cillin don't detect it, except for PC-cillin in real time scan, and it can't do anything with it. It tries to access the internet as soon as the pc boots up, and when on the internet, pops up winfixer and tries to install it.

Follow Atribune's procedure at:

The paths the program asks you for would be:

C:\WINDOWS\Offline Web Pages\logbak.dll

and

C:\WINDOWS\Offline Web Pages\kabgol.*

When Hijackthis comes up check these:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\Offline Web Pages\logbak.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: logbak - C:\WINDOWS\Offline Web Pages\logbak.dll

Restart the computer when you get the blue screen. If you have trouble with Safe Mode try it in regular mode.

You will know that it worked if the above lines
Either drop out of the scan or say File Missing. If you see them then check them and Fix Checked.

You have a multiple infection so repeat the vundofix for:

C:\WINDOWS\msagent\CHARS\vgareg.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\geragv.*

Post a new HijackThis scan when you are done and I will check to see if there is anything else that needs removing.

Thank you very much!!! System seems to be back to normal.

The 02-BHO: MSEvents Object was nowhere to be found when I was running VundoFix.

Do you have any idea where I might have picked this winfix up?

Log looks clean. No idea where it is coming from but it is a real epidemic.

Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained) and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site.

One way to make this more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new. Then you can google on the .dll or .exe file in the entry and decide if you want to keep it.

To avoid going to a bad site you might want to install IE-SpyAd and SpywareBlaster and make the other changes recommended at:.

Thanks again! Still no sign of winfixer.

A couple of my friends have had problems with Elite Toolbar or Elitebar. The regular antispyware programs (spybot, ad-aware, spysweeper, Microsoft Antispyware) don't seem to phase it. Are there any programs that will get rid of it?

Usually Elite Toolbar will go away with HijackThis in Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode, run HijackThis and there is usually a line similar to:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System service79] C:\WINDOWS\\\etb\\pokapoka79.exe

The info in the [ ] will change as will the number after pokapoka and so will the number of back slashes in the path. Check the line and Fix Checked then remove the folder that pokapoka lives in. There may also be an Elite Toolbar folder too. Remove it also. Empty the recycle bin. Then run spybot or adaware.

Reboot and see if it came back. If it did you need to post your hijackthis log on one of the forums like this one.
