My mistake. I must have jumped to another board without noticing.

If anyone has an idea: I'm writing for my neighbor who has a Dim4100 with Win ME and upon bootup gts the msg that C: \...vm32.vxd is missing or corrupted.

There appears to be no way to get the machine to boot.  I've tried the ME cd and even my XP but it doesn't work.   What can we do?  It seems to be stuck in DOS but/and we can't get any dos commands to work.

    Thank you.

I've never dealt with this problem but I do know that the vmm32.vxd file is a monolithic DLL file that is built when you frst install the OS. It contains information and DLL's related to your computer's hardware and basic configuration. It is unique to your computer and therefore you can't simply download a copy from the internet or get a copy from your installation CD (there's a copy on the CD but it's a skeleton version).
You can find a MS Knowledge Base article on this (in case your friend is using one of a couple types of scanners) HERE.
There is a very good page with all kinds of information on this file and related problems HERE.
A Google web or groups search for "vmm32.vxd" will yield much information as well.
If this file is indeed missing or corrupt, the solution, as far as I know, is usually a reinstall of Windows so the file can be rebuilt. If you can rename this file in DOS you can do an over-the-top reinstall of Windows or you can do a clean install (I usually prefer a clean install when faced with this choice). This file can be worked with but that is a job for experts.
For whatever it's worth, I backup this file every day.
This is not an easy problem and I hope this helps.

u can re-install ur OS to correct any issue with this one, but if this still persist, the problem might be on the hardware. try checking and updating bios. and check ur borads.

There is a way to rebuild the VMM32.vxd file but it's complicated. Sounds like a reinstallation may be in order.

It sounds like a reinstall is in order.  Since it is stuck in dos, how do I get started?  (All the google links assume the system is able to boot up).

    Many thanks.

Boot to the ME disc and it will format and proceed with the installation. The detailed reinstallation guide is HERE.

Try a system restore from the resource cd

    Boot to the cd

at the prompt you will see a:> or d:\...>

    type

    a:>c:  (press enter)

    c:\> cd windows

    c:\windows>cd command

    c:\windows\command>scanreg /restore

choose a date when your system was working fine and press enter if this dosent work then your only option is a reinstall
