Administrator account password

Setting up a couple of new Dimension 4700s with XP Home. It never asked me to set an Administrator account password.

Ctrl-alt-delete twice at the Welcome screen brings up the login dialog box. Username of Administrator, password blank, gives "Unable to log you on because of an account restriction."

Restart in Safe Mode, login as Administrator with blank password no problem. But when I go to set a pasword, the system freezes with the cursor blinking in the first "type a password" box. No keyboard response, no mouse, just a blinking cursor, and the sytem isn't completely frozen, because inserting software CD brings up the autorun menu, and the system recognizes inserting a USB thumbdrive.

I want to set a password on the Administrator account, and make Administrator available in "normal mode" (not just Safe Mode) before I deploy these boxes to my users.

You can only use Administrator account in Safe Mode with XP Home.  It turns it off in Normal Mode.  XP Home creates an Owner account in Normal Mode.

    Denny,
Thanks for the tip! Yes, I was able to reset the Admin passwords on both machines, and they don't lock anymore at the password reset box. I guess the password was corrupted, as your page mentions.

I just added your page to my Windows bookmarks. Thanks again!

    jswilson64,

See if you can successfully set the password with the procedure here.
