advice, enable updates?? stop error too...

Hi,
I have a fairly new Dell. I've enabled updates via update manager, but am beginning to wonder if this is a bad idea. (if it works, don't fix it?) or is it good to enable media player, XP etc to download updates??

Also have been getting stop error 0X50.
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGE_AREA
STOP: 0X00000050 (0XBAD0B148,0X00000000,0X805B9E11,0X000000002)

Only software I've installed myself is Avast Antivirus (4.6.691), ZoneAlarm basic (5.5.094.000), Ad-Aware SE Personal. Think it might be Avast that's causing the problem, as crashes have been when I've been on the web or email mainly but mostly when watching video or streaming video. Don't really want to disable it as I use web and mail regularly.

The events log hasn't helped much- only events at time of crash was avast starting hence wonder if that's the problem. Anyone know of any software conflicts with these programmes?

Don't really want to go down the road of fixing/reinstalling XP...

Thanks.:smileyhappy:

Some things that i would be curious to know is that is there another antivirus on the computer like McAfee or norton cause having more than one antivirus could cause conflicts. Also when do these stop errors happen? When the comptuer crashes? How long has this been going on. It is possible that a system restore might fix this problem but i wouldnt put too much stock in it.

    Hi, thanks.

no- there's no other virus software running. the machine came with norton, which I uninstalled, then installed free Avast.

the stop errors occur on the blue screen when the system crashes.

First time was while watching video on media player for about an hour. then while streming video was paused. (I guessed you just don't pause streaming video for too long?)

but since happened while just browsing the web, so unsure of cause. probably need to keep watching and noting what's happening when it crashes.

ps forgot to put our system details down:

    Our System:
    Dimension 8400 Desktop, P4 3.00GHz processor (HT)
1024MB RAM, 160GB HD, DVD/CD RW Drive, Radeon X300SE Graphics Card, Built-in sound, 17" Flat Screen Monitor.

    Software:
Windows XP Home SP2, Windows Media Player 10.
ZoneAlarm Basic Firewall, Avast Antivirus, Ad-Aware SE Personal.

I actually got the same error occured for me while I was clicking on AOL. I did a system restore and it hasnt happened again(it only been about a week though). I haven't added any software like you, but I have configued norton to permit all AOL  programs.
Im curious to what you're going to do though......

thanks, system resotre might be what I need to do then, but not sure yet.  It's been intermittent and not too frequent, so I'll wait and see how much it happens and try to work out the cause I suppose.

It is entirly possible that you might have contracted a virus. Typically they work while the internet is working. What specifically is the stop error code? That might give a better idea as to what is triggering the crash. How did the uninstalltion of Norton go? no errors or anything. Did you get rid of everypart of Norton. Part of it might be left on the system and i know of complications with the Norton software and ZLabs but i would not see that causing an issue such as yours.

someone recently sent me a message saying they had exact same error and also have zonealarm, but they haven't been back on the forum.

if anyone finds this posting who has the exact same error (ie same numbers in stop error, or nearly the same) can you post and let me know. I haven't resolved the problem and think it might be zonealarm.

    thanks.
