Brothers PC

can anyone help my brother out. heres the symtoms.
 
cant download mcafee updates, doesn't even come up if its searching for the updates.  
windows updates, can get onto the website but cant download critical updates.
cant log on to rbs digital banking, times out.
cant play certain games, will install shogun total war but not load.

    Sounds like he has picked up some nasties.
     
    Download, update and run these programs
     
    CoolWeb Shredder  Hijacker remover 
     

    These may help a bit.  Then run these online scans too

    Let them all fix/remove anything they find and take a note of all the names in case they are needed later
     
    Try that first and see what is found

    no joy with any of that. nothing found on pc. i'm not an expert but maybe he's missing something from his pc. i'm probably wrong but when he's been trying to install some programs it says he needs to have .net framework ver 1.1.4322 on his pc and i checked add/remove programs and its not there, so tried to download and install on his pc and it wont install.

    i'm almost ready to reinstall windows xp unless anyone has any ideas.

    The " .net framework " is only required by a very few programs.   I don`t have it.  It is not the cause of being unable to download
     
    If it is not spyware I think it could be IE Security settings
    Go to IE/Tools/Internet Options/Security
    Click "Default" and see if that helps
     
    You should also delete all Temporary Internet Files
    IE/Tools/Internet Options/General
    Under Temporary Internet Files, click "Delete Files"

    Next step would be to run a Repair of XP
    A repair won't lose any data, other than Service Pack (if not on CD), any Windows Updates and unsigned drivers, which will need to be re-installed afterwards.

    Stay offline to do a repair and do not go online again without a firewall enabled. After repairing XP, install Service Pack (if necessary), firewall and then you must install all Critical Updates next.
     
    How to Repair XP
    Boot up with the XP CD in the drive and let Setup run. Go past the first "R" repair option by pressing Enter just as if you're doing a clean install and you'll eventually come to an option to "Repair an existing installation". Select this one.
