ISP provider?  Dialup, DSL or cable modem?  Are you using a wireless router?

thanks tony..i do have a router..dell told me to reinstall windows..ha ha easy to say..i will continue to try to get other info..i don,t understand why i can still use google talk and can ping google when the problem exists..this would say the connection is good..thanks again for your time

Since you can ping Google even when you cannnot connect with Internet Explorer, sure sounds like some form of browser hijacker or Winsock problem.  You can download WinsockXPfix from here:  http://www.majorgeeks.com/WinSock_XP_Fix_d4372.html.

 

Also, if you are running XP SP2, you can go to  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Search.aspx?displaylang=en.  Download/install/scan with Windows Defender. 

 

Defender should be able to determine if you have something trying to hijack your browser.

    good info, i down loaded both..xpfix..win defender..ran both ..this problem in intermittant so will take a while to know..will keep you informed
