Clean Install, partiton question

I am on the part of the clean install of XP where I choose the partiton to install on. It looks like this:
 
- to set up windows XP on the selected item press enter.
- to create a partiton in the unpartitoned space press C
-to delete the selected partition press D
 
 
38163 MB Disk 0 at Id on bus 0 0n atapi [MBR]
 
-: Partition1 [FAT]                                                                 31 MB (   29 MB free)
C: Partition2 (dell drive) [NTFS]                                     38131 MB (25507 MB free)
 
 
Following Winsupersites advice I choose NTFS, however when I do that it says that there is already an OS on there and that is not recommended. So, do I delete the NTFS? then create a new partiton? and if so, I assume I will be given the option of picking NTFS or FAT?

    I did delete the partiton. Then I created a new partiton with NTFS and set the size to 1 below what it said I had. I didn't do any spliting. That should be OK right?

    Yes, delete the current partition and create a new one so you can now move your data off to a separate partition.  YOu have a 40 gig drive so just split it in half, create a new partition of 20 gigs and once Windows is install you can then format the unpartitioned space into a usable partition.

    During the create a partition phase, it shows you how much space you have, tab over and you can chnage that value.
