Well I am sorry to say it didnt help. I did find that when I have phone line hooked up to computer and the computer is turned off, the phone dont have dial tone until I disconect it from computer and then phone has dial tone.I am lost at this point! I will try to run hijack log and copy to disc. so that I can post it maybe something will show up on that
Try uninstalling modem in Device Manager, remove the software (make sure you have installation CD!), then reboot and let XP redetect it and reinstall the drivers.
I cant find my installation cd to reinstall my modem I did try changing the drivers but still no help I posted a hjt log at malware removal, but it dont seem like its got anything to do with malware? I have a dell laptop and when its plugged in to phone line and the computer is off, and I try to use the phone you get a dial tone. But when you try same with desktop computer all you get is static and room noise and no dial tone Thanks Jcamp.
If you have it, run Modem Helper to see if it can diagnose the problem. And/or click on the modem in Device Manager and go to diagnostics tab. See if that can identify the problem.
It's possible the modem died, especially if there was thunder storms and you don't have surge protection on the phone line.
Went to device manager ran the troubleshoot but couldnt find anything there.I click on query modem got error msg[.the port that modem is attached to could not be opened ,check device manager to verify all devices are functional.]I checket other devices but all seem to be working ok.I guess buy now I need to look at new modem, I have emachine desk top,xp-2 can I use a external modem that plugs into usb port? I dont know about putting in internal one in the tower!
Thanks for all your help,I will be trying that the first of next week have to wait on check to get into bank. But I will let you know how it goes!Again thanks
You have to uninstall the internal modem from device manager and pull the card out. It's easy to do. Unplug the system from the outlet then press and hold the power button for ~15 seconds. Ground yourself by touching something metal then open the case. Look at your model's user manual for instructions to open the case and remove PCI cards.
When you're done, close the case and boot the PC before you connect a USB modem. You want to be sure it still boots before adding any hardware. Follow the instructions to install the USB modem. It may want some software or drivers installed before the modem is connected, or it may want the modem connected first.
Hopefully this one will work and you'll know the old modem died. And you'll probably want to get a phone line surge protector in addition to the surge protector on the AC line.
