computer running very slow

over the last few days my dell started running slow. the internet runs very slow and i have broadband. its an inspiron desktop purchased 3 or so months ago. windows vista., 1 gig ram. 2.4 ghz processor. 222GB hard drive.

the issue im having is that when i try to run:

defrag

disk scan

registry cleaner

windows defender

mcafee security center

all i get is the dark screen that would normally display "do you want to allow this program to have access." now the display gets darker and stays dark. the only way out is to ctrl-alt-delete.

thank you in advance for any help!

It may be a virus, but I'm not incredibly sure. Go to the HijackThis forum and post there. The experts there will help you out. Good luck!

Yeah, I agree a virus. You will have to format that virus and I hope you have fresh installation of Upgrade Vista Edition and plain CD of full edition of WINDOWS 98 or ME and you can fight the trojan for us. So please, doing good work. I really did heard the e-virus is damaging someone else computer. Then some good guys is sending you the message and is asking you to play searching your memory of who is the dangerous websites. Good Luck. McAfee is the best and McAfee is waiting to hear from you on how to improve the McAfee Product so that you did got a dark screen and it is not suppose to be dark screen. McAfee should figure what kind of Virus file does that dark dimming your screen.

nah its not a virus that makes the screen dim. some other vista users can back me up. if you open a file that it doesn't recognize, it makes the screen dim brings up "do you want this file to have acess?" the dim screen is normal. its just that when the screen goes dim now thats all it does.

harplus3, I understand fully that the dim screening is normal, because I use Vista as well. But the fact that it doesn't come back after dimming is abnormal, hence my conclusion that it may be a virus. It may very well not be a virus too, that's why I referred you to the HijackThis forum in order to check to see if the experts there find anything wrong.
