Defragmenter won't run - how use chkdsk?

I am using a Dell 4600, Windows XP Professional computer. I have a C: NTFS hard drive and a D: external, FAT 32 hard drive. I want to defragment my C: drive and eventually defragment my D; drive. However, when I clicked on "Analyze," for my C: drive in the defragmenter screen, a message box appeared, stating that, "The defragmenter was aborted due to inconsistencies in the file system. Run Chkdsk or Scandisk to repair and then use defragmenter."
1) I assume that ScanDisk is not available in Windows XP. Correct?
2) If I need to run Chkdsk, as a newbie to Windows XP, could you please provide me with step by step instructions on how to run Chkdsk to repair problems.
Thanks.
Richard

You're right. XP has chkdsk instead of scandisk. They do the same thing as far as I can tell, so, I don't know why the name change. Open "My Computer". Right click on drive "c". Select "Properties" then "Tools". Select "Error checking". You will have to check the two boxes to fix files and recover bad sectors. When you click start you will get a warning to schedule the scan at the next start up. Click "OK" and restart the computer.Hope this helps.
