does dell install vista over xp formatted disk?

Hi, I just wondered if anyone can tell me if Dell could have supplied me a vostro1500 Vista ultimate,
that had a previously xp formatted hard drive??

This isn't meant as any sort of accusation... just trying to get to the bottom of why I am being faced with
"You don't have permission to save in this location" when trying to download programs ...

I had downloaded and installed numerous programs/applications with no problems when I suddenly started seeing the above message , it then prompts me to save in a 'user' profile but dosent let me do that either...

Microsoft Kb suggests that this occurs when vista has been installed on a drive that has been formatted with an earlier type of ntfs.

I am both administrator and owner despite this being my sons Christmas present and show as having full permissions too..

This all seems rather strange to me , and as I have had a post in both the HJT and the software section for some time with no-one pointing out any obvious malware etc... I am at a loss.

as I clearly havent formatted anything I am just wondering if this is a possablity ? as it was an outlet vostro...

At least then I can look for the least painless way of rectifying the problem...as I ahve read horror stories about reinstalling over vista, and indeed it appears I will need to completely wipe and reinstall ;( if the KB is correct

I am loathed to spend time on the phone, paying for the privaledge of trying to sort out a brand new(allbeit outlet) machine .

So as allways any and all help greatfully recieved.

Nick

No. The way they install doesn't even involve CDs. They create an image using their software in the factory. I don't know the name of it, but I watched MDG do the process. In that version, literally it's a series of select boxes, and they tick off what the image is supposed to have, then they click a button and out pops the image file.

So no, they didn't install XP first, your issue is coming from something else.

    Thanks for that!!

I kinda figured that but it's nice to have it confirmed....

The only concrete info I can find is that Microsoft Kb so I just wanted to rule out the basics...

    Thanks, Nick

Updates have bee rough in Vista, I'm not a basher by any means, but if you just look at all the login and permissions issues immediately after updates, it cannot be coincidence.

Ok, I read just a bit of your posts, nothing major to say the least, however Windows Vista has been having all kinds of permissions issues after updates.

I know you may have covered these, but I'll put my suggestions here:

    - Run a system restore to when it last worked
    - Check for the Downloads folder in each profile and check the permissions on it
    - Try saving to another location, like the Desktop, Documents, some other place

    Thanks for looking,

I have a litle bit of time now so I can have a bash , I was weary of doing a restore and making things worse, but enough people must have had a squiz at the hjt log by now, so I would guestimate that theres nothing obvious...

I have indeed checked permissions etc ad all seem fine , however I am unable to save anywhere else either (desktop for instance..)

My son initially wanted to download a small game or something and he needs my admin authorisation which works just fine (well it did lol)  but after entering my admin pass, it gave me those details...

I then tried to download it to my own 'program file under my own log in for the same massages...

I was able to download HJT I think it was , but only because there was allready a file there so the pop-up said do you want to overwrite... and it allowed me to do that...

I'll try the restore now malaware seems less likely...

I've read so much on vista that half people say dont use it and half say its ok :s but there seems to be soo many Vista bashers out there its hard to know what to believe...

I do seem to remember there were a few updates around that time ... too..

    Thanks again, Nick.

    Sure....

    Its chugging away now....

If I remember correctly I uninstalled three of the four updates around that time , as one was unremovable... to no avail, so i have gone to the restore point before that from memory.

as the computer was otherwise usable i wasn't to deperate, as i was in the midst of trying to purge /clean/remove/dissinfect my brothers computer at the time LOL...

So in the absense of any further advice I was happy to leave it for the time being :)

heres hoping it will do th trick, it's just fired up :)

    Nick.

well the sneaky old downloads crept up on me and I ended up installing 6 widows updates that had sat lying in wait ready to pounce on poor unsuspecting me ....

Forgive the over dramatisation, but thats how it felt hehe..

anyway all seems well on the download front :)

However I ended up with a System event Notification system error preventing any standard user logging on.....

Couldnt find enough info, but further updates were suggested so i carried that out and was then able to access the other useres, after a reboot, and further recomended updates are now in progress... so far so good at the moment

Thanks again for the 'push' to use restore that i needed..

Now if you can tell me how to have one instance of a program running serving all users instead of seperate user updated versions I'd be a happy man :)  But thats for another thread ;)

    Cheers Pawk
