Just got my new 1505 with vista. More OW than WOW.
Ok, security is a necessary evil given all the perverts who have nothing better to do than dream up viruses, spyware, etc.
But, almost every action requires confirmation that I really want to do something. Half of my programs are running into some level of dificulty installing. You get messages from Vista asking if the program installed correctly, the program says it installed, but you don't know until you try to run them. I keep getting that same message that Sonic's DLA is causing problems. I hope Roxio comes out with a real solution soon. Some programs were actually blocked, but I am not sure yet of all of them--but I had been using everything for a while under XP.
Granted some issues were expected, I knew my printer would have reduced capability because HP is not producing a Vista driver for it. Also, I will have to reduce the resolution so I can actually see the tiny icons.
But it seems they could have used a lighter touch.
Go to Control Panel and choose User Accounts. Go to the last choice, turn User Control on or off, and turn it off. It took me a long time to figure that out.
Why would you want to turn it off? I know it's an extra click but it's for the sake of security. The whole point is that a malware program can't/won't run on it's own with out your consent. I'm annoyed by the pop-up too, but disable the feature and you don't get the security. Intercourse feels good without a condom but would you risk the AIDS virus and not use one?
Those popups that make you authorize running a program are annoying but it's just one more click. To my point, turning it off defeats the purpose of having a more secure PC. So many malicious programs automatically run when the malware is installed and this security feature protects you from that. I'd rather be slightly inconvienienced than run the risk of having my computer infected with software that damages the Windows enviroment.
WDaren what do you mean by you will have to reduce the resolution to see the tiny icons? Most icons can be adjusted to be down right enormous in vista. Maybe I am misunderstanding what you mean.

Ok but changing icon sizes like desktop icons for example only takes two clicks. Right click on the desktop and under view adjust icon size. Maybe it is just me, but the first thing I do is look to adjust settings so that they work best for me. Vista isn't really anything much new. If you know your way around other versions of windows, then vista is no great stretch. I found just about everything where I would expect it to be. I'm not trying to argue or anything with you, but I feel it's hard to get a first impression until you start actually using the computer which includes adjusting these types of settings. This is my analogy whether good or bad: If I wanted to get a first impression on how a new car drives I would first have to adjust the seats, mirrors, etc. before I starting driving and that is kind of how I see adjusting fonts, icons, mouse settings, etc. in windows.
