Installing Win98 SE on a Dimension 9100

Trying to install Win98SE on a separate partition on my new Dimension 9100. Installs okay, but motherboard has many resource input/output range conflicts and video adapter cannot find any free resources. I have disabled everything I can and still boot to Win98, but the resource conflicts are still many. Seems to be ACPI that is using the resources that the graphics adapter and the motherboard need. If I disable/remove the ACPI it just reinstalls at boot up.
Anyone had any success running Win98SE on a 9100?

W98 and newer hardware do not mix, you are going to have to use a product like this to get it to work

    cvanhorn8600,

Actually you can install Win98/SE on new systems. I just did it on my XPS Gen3, P4 Extreme Edition, 250GB HDD, 2GB RAM, Radeon X800XT and Creative Audigy 2. Now I have dual boot XP Pro/98SE. I did it so I can play older games that cannot run on XP. It's not the easiest thing to do but it's possible. First I installed Win98 but I couldn't find drivers for Audigy 2 since there are no any. So I found my Win98SE CD and installed it. You just have to make sure that there are drivers for your components. And of course you have to use a few tricks for the whole thing to work.

As mombodog said you could use software like VMware or VirtualPC for Windows but if you want to play games with 3D acceleration you are better off installing 98SE. I tried both VMware and VirtualPC and it can play many games but not all of them. And none with 3D acceleration because any of those programs support 3D acceleration.

    Good luck.

Did you have any problems with resource allotment? If so, how did you solve it? I have basically given up and decided to keep my old computer (with a clean install of Win98SE as the only OS) as a game computer for older games. If I could resolve the resource problems I would still like to get Win98SE to work dual boot on the neww 9100 so I could sell the old Dell.

    cvanhorn8600,

The only problem I had was with memory amount (I have 2GB RAM which 98 cannot handle). When it came to Win98 first reboot I got error message, something about not enough memory to run Windows. I just added a line MaxPhysPage=30000 in [386enh] section in system.ini file that made Win98 see only 768MB of the 2GB I have and the installation continued without any further problems. If you have less than 1GB RAM you should be OK. Other than that everything went smoothly.

You just have to remember to install 98 first and on C drive or on primary partition on C drive and XP second. This way when you boot you'll be able to choose which OS you want to boot to, because XP detects any other OS installed prior XP and creates boot menu. Also XP doesn't care where it's installed, 98 on the other hand does. And remember to make sure that you have all the 98 drivers for the components on your new system. I had a problem with my Audigy 2 audio card and drivers for 98 (yeah... there are no any). But there are drivers for 98SE so I had to dig up my 98SE CD and reinstall it. So if you don't have all the necessary drivers don't even bother, wasted time.

Something else, if you have any important files on you hard drive... back them up before you do anything. The best way is to start clean (wiping out your hard drive). This way you're more likely to avoid any conflicts.

    Good luck.

Thanks, I have the drivers, but do to the resources conflicts (the input/output resources) that are being hogged by (motherboard resources) and the SATA stuff the graphics adapter doesn't have enough resources to run the driver. Oh well will just stay with the 2nd computer running Win98SE and use a KVM switch to change between the two. Cliff
