I'm trying to install Windows XP Professional SP2 on my new Dell Dimension E520 using the retail CD I bought a couple of years ago, however each time I try to install Windows I get this blue screen message: "A problem has been detected and Windows has been forced to shut down to prevent damage to your computer...". I believe this problem only appears when using a non-Dell Windows CD. Does anybody know how I can get past this? Thanks.
The Retail CD should install - there is nothing in a Dell to prevent it from installing.
Exactly when do you get the error message? While installing XP or after it's been installed? And, are you doing a "clean" install (reformatting the hard drive first)? if not you need to do that.
The correct install sequence is (1) Install XP (2) Install chipset drivers (3) install applications (4) install peripherals.
Inspiron 16 5630 Laptop and WD22TB4 Docking Station
Self-built desktop for recording studio application
I manage to boot the CD and the drivers appear to be loading but shortly after a blue screen comes up just before the actual installation saying "A problem has been detected and Windows has been forced to shut down to prevent damage to your computer.". I'm trying to do a clean install but am having no luck. I've managed to use the same CD on my previous Dimension 4400 without any problems but the E520 is not allowing me to continue with the installation.
