Library error when trying to install software on XP2
A little over a month ago I purchased an HP printer and following installation, I could not see any of the icons on the scanning software. Their representatives had me uninstall and reinstall many times, all to no avail. At one point, they got desperate and had me go into the registry. When that didn't work, they had no out, so I did a system restore to right before that particular phone call, since a a lot of different software was not working.
After the restore not everything worked properly, some software, like Dell Image Expert, says I have to go into Reg Edit, but eventually opens properly. Mostly though, whenever I try to install software using InstallShield, the latest version of Nero, PowerDVD, Arcsoft Photoimpression, Smart panel (both part of the Epson printer I eventually went with), I get the error over and over. It says "An error occurred while launching the setup. Library not registered." On top of that, since this happened, every time I restart my computer, I get a pop up window from my C drive, C:\Program Files\Common which has three folders in it com_os, win2k_xp, and win9x_me.
I've updated to the latest version of directx, cleaned up my registry with three different tools, and checked with a friend via AIM that our InstallShield 11 registry keys are the same. Still, I get the same exact error. The only suggestion I've been given is to wipe my computer clean and start again, but not only is that extremely time consuming, I'm fairly sure I don't have every single .exe anymore.
I've called HP several times to try to find out what it was exactly the lady did and they say that they are printer experts and don't know anything about how to solve this issue, if I want to talk to their software department, they can connect me, for a rather substantial hourly fee. The same is true of Dell and Microsoft.
Other than the shoddy customer service from HP, does any of this sound familiar to anyone and is there some fix, registry or otherwise, that they can suggest? Thanks for your help.
