ME system freezes on boot up
Having problems with System freezing on Boot Up. Desk Top is displayed o.k
but Task Bar Icons do not appear. I click restore button, and this usually does the trick on the second Boot up.
Been into Msconfig, removed Office from Start up, checked that selective start up is ticked..
Problem seemed to start after a Nokia Phone Suite was installed, but I have now removed that from start up.
Any suggestions please.

Thanks for your interest Osprey
I am on ME, so can do a System Restore, although some
other stuff has also been loaded since, so not sure whether it is
worth the hassle, Still thinking about it.
Incidentally, my set up is the same as yours,Dimension 4100 P3-933, Win ME

Reply What happens if you boot to safe mode?
If you can not get to safe mode either try Dell's knowledge base article # 1041988...."How to restore a previous system configuration using the System Restore utility if I can not start MS ME either normally or in safe mode."

Reply Thanks for reply Sput.
I can get into Safe Mode o.k. Tried it tonight. Have looked at the Knowledge Base
Article, thank you for the link. Because my son has loaded one or two programmes
recently, don't really want to go too far back. I have done Scan Disk thorough, defragged,
cleaned Registry with Reg Cleaner, ran Ad-Aware etc, and deleted several start up items
in msconfig. Machine is behaving better now, but still getting occasional start up freezing,
which I can overcome by pressing restore button. Invariably o.k. the second time. I can
live with it at present, but will have another look at msconfig start up.
Reply Think I may have solved the problem. No trouble for several days now.
The first indication I had of a freeze up was that System Tray Icons were
not loading. I noticed that the first icon was a Card Reader plugged into USB
Hub. I have ejected this, and no problems since. Strange, but it seems to
have cured the problem.
Reply - When things freeze on startup, it's almost always because of a misbehaving driver. And I've seen several instances of these USB flash drives that have exhibited strange behavior like this. The games you installed may have created a conflict, so uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drive drivers may be required.
