missing tray icons

I have noticed that the some of the tray icons on my Inspiron 1000 notbook are missing. In particular the remove hardware safely icon. The only changes that I have made are to add my laptop to a Lynksys home network, and to download the suggested upgrades for Win XP from microsoft. On the customize notification screen, many of the icons on the "past icons" list are not the right icons. They have been replaced with the folder icon. The safely remove hardware icon is on the list but the desciptor says its the new mail icon and even by selecting the always show option the icon does not appear on the task bar. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggested solutions?

There's really no problem. Past icons usually show the wrong image because the programs are not currently active. For the Power icon, recheck the setting in Power Options. It should appear when you have something plugged into a USB port. You might have Hide Inactive Icons selected.

Well there is a problem.....the remove hardware safely icon allows me to power off pci cards before removing them...this is the icon that is missing. Also the descriptors were always correct until the icon dissappeared from my tray.

I have a desktop, but selecting add volume control to the notification area helped me get the "Safely remove hardware" icon back.  See Matador14's post for more on the problem: http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=sw_winxp&message.id=112072&query.id=177115#M112072
