I have a dimension 5100 using ms xp. I have sigma tel audio speakers. I have run all the diagnostics that I can find and the all come back ok. I have tested the hardware and it says the speakers are working although there is no volume. I ran the boot diagnostics and the speakers worked. I am lost.
What caused the problem to start with? Did you do a complete reinstall? Did you have a virus and it happened after the virus was removed? Did you uninstall something or install something?
What is the status of the SigmaTel audio in the Device Manager? Does it show an error code or does it show "working properly'?
Questions need to be answered to try and help you. We can't even make an "educated guess" without the answers to the basic questions.

I had just installed a new part, a front panel assembly that had the on/off button and usb ports on it. I reinstalled the old part and the sounds came back. I will contact dell to fix the problem with the old part.

I am only sharing my experience and maybe there are some other ways, When it happens for me, i install a new windows, then it works fine. The problem related to your windows and softwares you have installed on it. Because as you said, your speakers work true.
