Problem with Norton AntiVirus 2004

I am having a problem running LiveUpdates on Norton AntiVirus 2004.  The problem that I am having is that the window will come up prompting me to click next to download and install the updates (there are 16 of them) and then I will click on Next, but the window will dissappear within 5 seconds.  I will then try to open the LiveUpdates again and I get an error LU1823 telling me that LiveUpdate is running, when it isn't.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling three times and I am still having the same problem.  I also have gone to the Norton Help and Support board and the Automated Support Assistant tells me that I need to run the LiveUpdate because my Norton AntiVirus2004 files are not up to date.  I also go through what they are telling me to do and the window will still close within 5 seconds.

Here are the specs on my computer:

Dimension 4550 Pentium 4 @ 2.66 GHz
Windows XP home edition
512 MB DDR SDRAM @ 333MHz

Thank you for your help.  :)

You are not alone. Here is some interesting reading on Norton Live Update. Most of the posts refer to the 1/7/04 update:

Thank you for that link, but those problems are not describing the problem that I am having.  Well, except for the reply by oh_bean:

OK I did this yesterday......I took Norton System Works 2003 and Personal Firewall 2003, off my computer. I searched the registry for anything related to Norton or Symantec to delete everything. (In fact after doing the uninstall of System Works and Firewall it didn't leave anything I could find.) Then I installed Norton Antivirus 2004, and Norton Personal Firewall 2004.
I traded one set of problems for another. I ran Liveupdate manually after installing NAV 2004 and NPF 2004 yesterday and rebooting the computer, then doing Liveupdate, etc. It seemed OK and no errors. In IE I can reverse the fix we used against the 1/7/2004 updates in Options, Tools and the computer is still OK, the menus work and Word opens.
So then I see today, all day, that as I am doing stuff that the Liveupdate keeps coming on. I see the liveupdate icon by the clock. I have seen it maybe 7 times today, and thats the times I saw it when I was on the computer. I know my definitions are up to date after I manually did it yesterday, 1/7/04. So tonight I got sick of the liveupdate thing, which I used to see only once a week. So I try to do a manual Liveupdate to see what happens. It downloads one thing listed as, "Virus definitions (2 Updates..)" it says. But then it won't install em cos theres errors listed below.
This happens over and over. I get several errors when I retry:
"LU1806 (or LU1816 or LU1817): LiveUpdate was not able to install any of the updates that you selected...."
    and:
    "LU1823: LiveUpdate is already running . . . Please wait for this LiveUpdate session to . . . "
So I go to disable Automatic Liveupdate. As soon as I hit Options I get an instant error everytime "Norton AntiVirus has encountered an internal program error". So once I hit OK to close to error window I still get the options screen. I disable automatic liveupdate. Close it. Only to find it isn't disabled and I have to go back to Options, through the error and see its checked still, to auto liveupdate. Its not worth my time. I will use something else.
I give up. Anyone recommend a good virus program, preferably FREE! But one that works?? Thanks. This is the first time I have had serious troubles with Nortons products. Guess I was lucky till now!!

I do have an email into Symantec's support and hope to hear back from them.  Very frustrating.

I have been having a problem with Live Update as well.  But my problem is that it checks in and recognizes that there is an update.  It then seems to install, BUT it does not install.  It seems to finish.  But then I run Live Update again and the same update is still there - again it will download and seem to install ...... this keeps going.  The only solution I have found is to download manually from the Symantec site.  I have both NAV 2004 and NPF 2004.  This is a real nuisance - Thanks Symantec!

I use McAfee VirusScan on my older computer, and whenever it acts weird, I make sure to delete everything in the TEMP folder.  I follow these steps:

    1)  Restart the computer

    2)  Afterwards, click the Start Button, then Run.

    3)  Type %temp% and click OK

    4)  Delete everything inside that folder, and reboot the computer.

Now see if Norton still has those glitches.

I have had Norton Antivirus installed now for 2 months. I have already updated it 8 times. This evening when I ran live update it said I needed to update subscription services and virus definitions. Now my subscription is good for another 10 months, what is the subscription services that it is talking about. I left the check in both boxes, downloaded them and it told me to restart. I am just wondering if I am in for problems tomorrow for letting it update subscription services. Anybody know what subscription services is?
