programs opening on start up

I need to know how to change all of the programs that are opening at start up.  I am not very technical so I need it explained in a very simple manner.  I have done this on a computer with Windows 98 and it was easy however I can't figure out how to do it with Windows XP.  I have 2 teenagers and they have downloaded so much it is taking my computer forever to get going.  I have alot of free space on it but it is soooo slow.  HELP!

Here are sites which will identify what all the entries are in msconfig

    Start/Run and type in
    msconfig
    OK
    Startup Tab

Keep the page open then go to one of the links below. They will tell you what all the entries are and whether you can disable them or not. They will also identify any malware.  Disable everything which is not needed to run at start up

Read the Key at top of page. Use the Search box to check all your entries

When you reboot you will get a message saying you have started in "Selective Startup"  Click "Don`t show this message again" then OK

Not sure if you mean programs that are loaded (rather than opening) during windows startup process, if so then:

Start > Run type in msconfig then click OK

When system configuration opens click on the Startup tab, then only if you can clearly identify the program(s) you don’t want to load at startup then uncheck the relevant checkboxes then click OK & reboot

Otherwise go to Control Panel & use Add/Remove to remove unnecessary software/programs

"2 teenagers"... hmmmm..... if your research does not recognize any of those programs, rather than disabling them right away, it might be good to do a scan or two. If the kids do any file sharing, an anti-malware scan is a MUST.
