Reinstalling XP - Error at 34%

Recently my Latitude CPx froze up on me and was only able to be started in safe mode. I decided to reinstall XP professional, but when it is in the stage where it is 'installing devices'...it just hangs at 34%. I have tried a different copy of XP professional, and it does the same thing. Any ideas on why this is happening?

By the way, I was able to sucessfully install Windows 2000 without any problems, but I need XP back on.

Thanks.

More info would be nice! I've found that marginal memory modules or Gforce 3 cards could conflict with the install of XP. Post back with more detail.

Sorry about the lack of info...

I have 196mb of memory, and no graphic cards. I have installed xp on this laptop 2 otther times since release in October. oh, and I actually meant it hangs when there is 34 minutes left on install time.

Are you connected to the Internet at the time? Unlike 2000, XP will go to the MS website and look for fixes at the time of installation.

Try disabling onboard sound ,onboard video, usb emulation , clear NVRAM ,load setup defaults then reboot also unplug external devices even the speakers
