Restore vs Reinstall

I am unable to update Windows XP. Seems my Windows Management Instrumentation information (whatever that is) might be corrupted.  I was told I would either need to reinstall windows or restore to an earlier time when things were working.  I am not very knowledgeable in this area and the reinstall seems very complicated.  To restore, do I just lose everything that has been saved/installed since the point I restore at?  So I will need to backup anything installed/saved during that period.  Is there more to this procedure?  Thanks for all your help!

You're right on track. Restore is the better option at this point. You will lose any applications or other system changes since the restore point you select, but user files will not be affected.

Go to Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Select the option to restore your computer to an earlier time point, then pick a date and restore point prior to this issue arising.

If that does not help, please post back.

    Huff77,

when you do a system restore, only system settings will be changed. files such as documents or pictures that you have saved on the computer will remain intact. programs that you installed though, between the date today and the date you want to restore to, might no longer work after the system restore.

with windows xp reinstall, you only lose files when you reformat the hard drive. if you have files you dont have back up for, you can try doing winxp repair install first. boot to the winxp cd, press enter on the first prompt, press f8 to accept the EULA, and press R to perform repair on the winxp installation you have on the computer.

    hope this helps. :smileywink:

p.s. sorry, osprey4, am a slow typer. :smileyhappy:
