Screensaver won't initiate!
Was wondering if anyone else is having this problem. Just got my system 10/12/05, and unless I set the screensaver to kick in after 1 minute, it will never come on. XPS 400 2.8 Dual-core, 19 inch digital flat screen, nvidia 6800, and 1 GB memory. All settings are factory, and I even did a restore to exactly the way that it came out of the box and still no dice. Have been on the phone with tech, but so far no answers. This one really has me stumped, as I don't usually have issues that I can't resolve myself. Any responses would be appreciated! I am running Media Center version of XP by the way.

- I have the same problem with my screen savers. The only way they work is in the preview mode. I am new to XP, but I don't think it is background programs since it hasn't worked from day one. (My XPS machine is 3 days old) I have closed all the programs on the taskbar with no change.
Thanks for the help but I have already tried the background program thing. I also have a wireless mouse. It works fine if it is set for one minute, but any other setting and it will not come on at all. I even updated the Intellipoint drivers for the mouse, and no difference. The settings in the registry change when you change the length of time, but nothing happens. Have even tried it in safe mode, and same thing. I am really stumped. Dell support doesn't have a clue, even though my system is exactly as it was sent to me,.............that is why I figured other people had to be having this problem too. this is a small problem but it is really annoying having your screensaver come on every minute, or not at all! They told me to call Microsoft,...............Right! Like I have a whole day to set on the phone. Plus I don't think they will even support the OS, if it is an OEM install.
Oh well, I presume they will figure it out sooner or later.

I would really like to help you with this problem, because my friend has the same sort of problem, but I can't really think of anything than just the basics.Firstly, make sure the screensaver is the latest version. I don't think that many screensavers are regularly updated anyway, but check the distributor's/manufactuer's website and check for certain drivers.I know that the 3D Windows XP Screensaver requires DirectX 9.0c - which my friend hasn't got because he doesn't have the Internet. I gave the 3D screensaver to him, but it only loads in Preview mode, not when it's supposed to. :smileysurprised: So maybe make sure you have DirectX up-to-date.Also, make sure you have a big enough RAM and virtual memory. I recently wrote a message about this in a thread about switching user accounts - try changing the size of the paging file and see what happens.I don't really know what else could cause it to happen, but I hope you find some answer...!- I having the same problem, only changing screen saver to 1 minute doesn't seem to make any difference. I'm pretty sure that it has something to do with the processes running in the background because. I used a migration software package to move everything from my old computer to my new xps400. the first step that the migration software did was end as many processes as possible and immedately the screen saver started working. The other problem is that now I'm turning off my monitor because the power saver mode is never kicking in.
do not give up hope, but if you do not want to be bothered, i can see that. go to run msconfig
where it says normal startup diagnostic or selective select diagnostic startup are reboot. Set the screen saver to 3 minutes and see what happens. If the screen saver does initiate, that means it is a background program. to set everything to normal go back to msconfig and select normal startup and reboot. hope that helps!
