I originally posted this 1day after the network installer became avialable (and predictably got no responses). So, now that lots of people have done it -- here we go again.
Post SP2's installation the volume icon and the power icon will occassionally disappear from the taskbar. The icons can usually be brought back with a restart or from the control panel but it's *very* annoying when your battery icon goes bye-bye.
So please -- has anyone else ever looked down (post SP2) and noticed that these icons were gone? Any solutions other than the workarounds I've mentioned?
For what it's worth, I've observed this behavior on the 3 different machines I've put SP2 on (an i5100, an lD600, and an emachines lappy). I'm almost tempted to believe it's my installer file. Please, someone else have this issue!
I am having the same problem. I'm running XP Home on an Inspiron 1100 and several more icons are missing. Unfortunately my battery, sound, and other icons are missing 100% of the time even after restart. I am considering restoring my PC to pre-SP2 settings but am unsure if this will help. Any advice?
Alright... I've at least found a temporary fix. I use my computer for school and personal use so this may not be practical for office users. All you really have to do is create a new user profile. The reason the icons disappeared for some users is their profile was corrupt. Create a new profile but be sure you save all the documents under that profile (i.e. My Documents, My Webs, My Music, ect...). Once you've done this the icons reappear without a glitch...
It's more that my systray icons keep disappearing ... goto control panel, click the appropriate button (sounds and volume for instance) and cycle the taskbar icon settings from off (click apply) back to on (click ok)

this requires registry edit . . .
open regedit
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify
Delete the "IconStreams" value
Delete the "PastIconsStream" value
close regedit
open task manager / processes
locate / end "explorer" process
file / new_task "explorer"
close task manager
reboot
right-click system_tray / customize notifications
battery "always show"
windows security center "always show"
any other item you feel to be crucial "always show"
volume "always hide"
all other items "always hide"
this procedure will need to be repeated once in a while . . . usually when there is a change resulting in you being "notified" by one of the programs . . . still far better than restartin' your computer.
My battery and volume icons are missing. I just purchased an Inspiron 5160, and am very disgusted. I could not reach phone support or chat. What do I do?
Chazanova 2/10/03 suggests that the loss of system tray icons is due to UPnP being enabled. When UPnP is disabled, then the icons will be loaded reliably. Apparently something about this service prevents all the icons from loading. I found logging out and then in again also brought them back.
