Unhappy Customer

I have just recently purchased a $ 1600 Dell computer.  I thought I had purchased a super computer.  Instead I sit hear with a computer that is slower than the 10 year old ADK sub-1000.  I have followed all the rules, have loaded in $ 100 worth of Norton software to prevent spyware, addware, spam, etc.etc.etc.
I am not pleased at all with this Dell Computer.  I wish I could take it back.  Are others having the same issues and if so have you had any luck turning your piece of junk into something that will operate ?

Press [CTRL] [ALT] [DELETE] at the same time to bring up "Windows Task Manager". Click on the "Processes" tab, then click on the CPU header twice; that should move the processes using most of the cpu's time to the top. is anything there constantly above 10?

    YUP

I'm in the same postition. I want to return mine also. I had a 10 year old Compaq that was running Windows 98 for 6 years and never had a fraction of the problems that I've had with my new Dell in just 4 weeks. Now I can't connect to the internet. My ISP has to come to the house to look at it. The wonderful, so-called "techs" at Dell told me they couldn't help me. Before that, though, I was having problems with my normal programs. Programs locking up, shutting down. It's ridiculous. I have twice the hard drive space and twice the memory than I had on my last computer and I never had these problems before.  So now, I get to look at my beautiful new Dell computer that can't access the internet just sitting there on the desk. So glad I made the switch. The commercial should be "duuude, WHY did you get a Dell?"

    BFUNK,

Why can't you access the Internet? What type of error messages are you getting? What did your ISP say when they came to check out your computer?

    jsw702,

Loading more and more software on your computer is one sure way to slow it down. My advice would be to do a clean install of Windows XP and start from there loading up a piece of software at a time and seeing when it slows down a lot. Then you know which piece of software on your system is causing all the slow downs.

A good site to look into regarding services and such and what you can do without is www.blackviper.com. Also, like a previous poster said, do control-alt-delete and see what is hogging all your CPU time.

    ERROR MESSAGE:

"Secure Delivery Plug-in has encountered a problem"

My ISP hasn't come out yet, Not until Thursday.

It seems my IP address changed.

When I go to run :CMD >IPCONFIG - My IP address begins with 169, which Comcast said is a Dell IP and my default gateway is blank.

Thanks for the info. and I will try.

I'm still turned off by the Dell product.  I have an old P-3 Compaq armada lap top for work.  This machine has been around the world 20 times, who knows how many airport xray machines, it has places the paint is knocked off, I have dialed into and direct connected the internet from Mexico to China and it is still 100X faster than my new Dell that sits in my house unabused by the rigors of travel.  I guess I should have bought a compaq.

I also never got my rebate that I was supposed to get and also never got my shipping rebate that was due to me.  I believe Dell is to busy worrying about selling the product intead of standing behind what they promise.

    Mike,

Once I look at CPU time I'm I looking for soemthing over 10:00 or 10 seconds .  I assume 10 minutes.  If something is over 10 minutes what can I doo to change that. ?

    BFUNK,

Do you use dial-up, DSL, or cable?  Your IP address depends on what type of account you have with your ISP.  If you have broadband, most likely you have a static IP address which means it doesn't change (normally).  If you are on dial-up then you probably have a dynamic IP address which means each time you dial in you get whatever IP address is next on the list to be assigned to someone out of the pool your ISP uses.

If you have a broadband Internet connection, are you using a router?

While you are waiting, do a Google search using the error message you are getting.  I just checked and there was a lot of newsgroup posts regarding that message.  It might help you figure out your problem before some tech from your ISP comes out and reinstalls Windows for you.  :smileyhappy:

    jsw702,

Consider it a percentage (%). If something is consistently using a high amount of CPU time, without letting it go, jot down the process and post it back. Usually adware/spyware and malware is responsible for this.

Most all processes will use an amount of CPU time, briefly, then go back to 0% usage.

I'm using a cable modem. I called my ISP and gave them the IP address. It starts with 169. They're telling me that their IP addresses start with 68 or 65.  All the tech support kept telling me was to get rid of any pop-up or spyware programs which I told them 65 times I already did. The language barrier is a real problem with Dell tech support.

After listening to him read out of the Dell handbook they give their "techs", I gave up.

the only answer he could give me was to call my ISP. The tech before him said to call Microsoft.

I'm at my wits end right now.
