USB Issue w/ Dell Dimension 8200 and Win XP SP2

Problem: After installation of Win XP Pro SP2. USB Printer stops responding after a few minutes. Only solution that works is to unplug the USB cable from the printer and wake it up myself, or uninstall SP2. Have worked w/ Canon and am sure that it is not their issue. When
I consulted w/ Microsoft I was referred to Dell, as they are my OEM company.

Other solutions attempted: Have latest avaialbe BIOS and have USB Legacy Emulation and Controller both set to on. Have all USB root Hubs set in device manager NOT to power down USB ports.

Everything appears to be pointing at some idiosyncracy between XP Pro SP1 and SP2, and how it relates to my USB root hubs.

I saw at least one message with a similar problem, but there was no response. Please don't suggest updating the printer driver, as that has already been done.

My System: Dell Demension 8200, P4 2.53 GHZ,  2GB RAM, 128MB VRAM, 400+ GB HD space.

Anyone care to venture a guess?

Cheers!
Mike

Not to sound overly skeptical, but somehow I'd expect that this would be Canon's position on the problem.  For what it's worth, 8200s work fine with SP2 and Epson USB printers.

While it's a bit of an extreme measure to take, one solution that's worked for a variety of issues has been to simply reinstall WinXP to a formatted drive, and get SP2 on immediately after the OS (followed by the system drivers), rather than after everything else has been installed.  It seems to integrate itself with everything better if it's installed ahead of peripherals and miscellaneous applications, which makes sense, given the modifications it makes to the core OS.

I didn't have to mess with anything. Go to Device Manager and see if the USB has SP2 drivers.  If not click update driver and point it to the windows folder and update it.  Some people have had problems with the usb not updating so they had to force it. If not try  removing and reinstalling the canon.

Thanks for the advice. I tried to update the USB drivers but all I get are the USBHUB and USBD drivers dated 7/1/2001. (This is with SP 2 installed).

Unfortunately I have had to roll back to SP1. My Canon is the primary printer on my system. I have an Epson Stylus Photo R200 color inkjet, along with a pleothora of USB devices that are not affected by SP2. All ports are set to prohibit windows from turning them off (in the device manager).

I just wish that Canon would sytep up to the plate and look into this. I have provided them with detailed information. All I got was a "There are no updated frivers or the MF5550, sorry for any inconvenince caused.".

I am throwing in towel on this, will sell the unit and go back to HP. Sorry Canon, but ya just didn't have what it takes.

    Hi Flooby!

Funny you mention the Epson USB drivers...MY color imkjet printer is an Epson Stylus Photo R200 and it works fine, along with every other USB device.

I have already tried the colution that you suggested, and have the same reproducible problem. I am convinced that it's a Canon driver issue in this case.

Thanks for your input, it was appreciated.

    Regards,

    Mike

I have an Epson Perfection 1640SU SCSI/USB scanner. They took forever to put XP drivers on the website. I got mine from Europe monthes before they showed up on the US site.  Try another country.  If you need it, it might be an alternative.

    Try turning USB Emulation off.

This is something that HP is aware of with it's systems and Dell computers, and appears to be a problem with Lexmark printers also.  Perhaps the USB Emulation settings are getting corrupted by SP2 in such a way that it prevents printers from working properly.
