Thanks, you put me on the right track. I installed the Ricoh package downloadable at Dell. Three drivers were installed, and their installation made the Base Device ?'s go away. They were:
Ricoh Memory Stick Host Controller,
Ricoh MMC Host Controller, and
Ricoh xD-Picture Card Host Controller

That is correct sir. The Base system device(3 of them) will show on some platforms, the Ricoh driver pack from Dell should work for most users. The reason for the 3 to show is that the universal card reader's platform architecture has 3 seperate entities for 3 standards of mem cards. Two additional that work off of SD, Compact MMX, etc. There are a distinguishable difference to 3 cards out of the 5 and the latter 2 run of 2 of the existing three platforms prior to a driver set doing this for you. Just like an SD card will show for some on default and then you pop in another and it doesn't show until you go to device manager and update the new card driver, say if you threw in a compact flash. This doesn't happen on every platform, it's config. related to the whole chipset and Southbridge via to the Northbridge of the architecture or vice versa on some other platforms. And you will see the default initial standard on a Vista install below all those in device manager, the SD card reader device. Not to worry, after a driver update manually or automatically, given some platforms, it will read all five cards, ( really if anyone uses all 5 formfactors at one given time). This is only to clarify why some experience it and some don't. With XP,H,P, or MC editions, you would usually have to update a driver for a new card that hasn't been inputted yet, usually the first time and then it's done.

I'm having these same symptoms with RC-2, however I'm running the 64 bit version. Has anybody accidentally tripped over any 64 bit drivers from Ricoh or others that will get this reader working? I've been searching but haven't found anything...
