Vista won't start, won't boot from CD
Vista won't start - It begins the process, I get the dell screen with the progress bar, and once the blue progress bar gets to the end I just get a cursor in the top left corner of the screen. I am unable to enter anything. I have tried booting from the CD. I have put the Dell Operating System CD in the drive. I have tried pressing F2 and F12, and neither works. I've tried pressing them once, repeatedly and everything in between. I'm at a loss on what to do now. Thanks in advance for your help.
- Tell us about the system. What model number ?Do you have the cd version or dvd version of Vista ? Do you have a cdrw or a dvd burner ? Did you leave the Vista OS in the tray with the blinking cursor going for a long period of time or did you get frustrated after a short period, and removed the disk ?
- Lets try Safe Mode. When you first turn on your system, keep tapping the F8 key until you access the bootup menu, than select Safe Mode. If this works then do a system restore to a previous date and time and reboot into normal mode and see if that helps.Others may weigh in with their suggestions. Or call tech support
- I have a Dimension E520. It came loaded with Vista. the CD that I have is a Dell CD that says Operating System "Reinstallation DVD Windows Vista Home Premium 32BIT" P/N NX589. I have a DVD burner. I left the CD in the drive for a very long time with the cursor blinking ... like an hour or longer.

Try also unplug the power cable from the back of the tower, press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds, try again to boot to the F12 and select the CD/DVDAre you using a wireless keyboard???GioAguilar

probably the system is trying to boot to that Device... go to the BIOs and set the HDD to be the firs boot option, that should help to get your computer to boot when you have plugg the tablet- Thanks for the ideas. I did two things at once. I did the power cord unplug/replug, and I also unhooked all of the stuff attached to the computer that I didn't need - like a thumb drive, a Wacom tablet and the internet connection. That did it - it started fine. I plugged the thumb drive back in, and restarted and it started fine. Then I plugged the tablet back in and restarted, and Vista wouldn't start - I don't understand it because I've been using the tablet on the system for ages. Weird. I still have to sort that one out, but at least I know the source of my original problem.Thanks everyone for your help.
