Win XP or NortonSystemWorks 2005 problem?

Nothing like trying to post a new message and have your laptop lock-up!  So I'll try it again.  Just loaded NSW2005 bundled with PersonalFirewall and Anti-Spam.   When using Disk Doctor,  "Fix Errors" and "Enable Free Space Testing" are both checked-off.  When restarting, the blue screen comes up and the following messages are appear:  THE FILE IS NTFS.  CANNOT OPEN FILE FOR DIRECT ACCESS.  WINDOWS HAS FINISHED CHECKING THE DISK.  I have NSW2004 on my other computer and it works just fine.  All I want it to do is fix the errors and enable free space testing.  Can you help me?   Thank You...

I tend to agree with Deitmar. After using Nortons stuff since about '95, I too have come to the conclusion that their NSW,Av, and Firewall have turned bloated and error prone. AFTER paying for and installing AV '05 and Firewall '05 (I stopped using NSW w/ the 04 release) I recently uninstalled ALL Nortons stuff on my desktop and Laptop.

I installed AVAST AV Pro and Sygate Firewall Pro in Nortons place. As a utility I have installed TuneUp Utilities 2004. The results of my makeover are 1: Systems 'services' went from about 45 to 50 running down to about 32 to 36 running 2: a leaner running machine 3: Auto updates that are alot more frequent than Nortons. TuneUp Utilities 2004 is far far superior than most of the stuff on the market, and it beats Nortons utility suite hands down.

Peter Norton made excellent software. Symantecs buyout of his AV software has sadly resulted in many users switching.........There are just better alternatives available.

The fix is simple: Uninstall the Norton garbage. Their software is worse than useless, as you have seen by now. after uninstalling, it is still a good idea to go to Symantec's website and follow their instructions to manually uninstall their siftware in order to remove the stuff their "uninstall" has left behind.

Yup, but that was a long, loooong, time ago. Actually, Norton started out selling a very useful and hugely popular file manager and user interface for DOS (the famous Norton Commander), and later followed up with a DOS utility suite. His tools were indeed useful in the old DOS days, and also during the 16-bit Windows days. At least since the time that Microsoft is selling operating systems based on industrial-strength foundations (meaning Win2K and WinXP), Norton's (now Symantec's tools) have turned obsolete. As a general rule, the quality of Symantec stuff is far below anything Microsoft would dare to offer their customers these days. Installing anything Symantec on a healthy modern PC is generally a terrible idea, and usually does far more damage than good.

Your statement has merrit, but for the price one pays for a product that is increasingly getting bad press in this and many other tech chat rooms, I have made my decision. No more Nortons.

And I did it reluctantly having tried to live w/ their incesant problems. But, my loyality and patience has finally ended.

Besides, I got tired of playing wet nurse to a product that should not cause problems

if it was me (if i was going to try to get systemworks 2005 to work for me), i would try to get help at the symantec website.. symantec has an excellent knowledge base, as well as other tools.. just type the error message in "search", in symantec's knowledge base.. it is possible that there is a bug in the new program that symantec will have to address..

Redwolfe 98,  Thank you for the information with regard to Symantec. I had e-mailed them a few days ago and their tech responded with,  "My problem is a known  Microsoft  issue".  Really?  I didn't have the problem with NSW04 , only with 05.  Interesting huh??  Thanks again...

Well, you must remember it is Symantec "tech support" you are dealing with. "We missed the part where any of this is our problem"... No further comment.

Dietmar,  Thought I replied back to you with thanks for your help.  I didn't see it posted when I re-entered the site.  So I'm sending you a "Thanks Again".
