Trying to install win95 cd on older Lattitude CP M233XT laptop with formated harddrive. Win95 cd won't boot system, but I have win95 floppy boot diskette that will get me to DOS. Once in DOS, I change out the floppy drive for CD drive and put in the win95 disk. I can get a D: drive prompt and it does read the win95 cd, but I haven't been able to access or find a setup file (or a win95 directory for that matter). Tried D:\win95\setup, D:\setup, as well as looking through all listed directories for a setup file.
I bought a legal full version win95 cd on ebay and it says it is for installation on new computers. Dell tells me that the resource CD (or download) for this laptop is no longer available, but since I can access D: drive after floppy boot, seems like I should still be able to install win95. What am I doing wrong?
The drives for this system are not hot swappable. You can not swap the drives without rebooting the system. If you have a CD-RW you can create a bootable CD to boot the system with so that you will not need to swap drives only disks.
I've already tried burning the win95 boot diskette info on to a CDR. I also downloaded win95 bootdisk info from bootdisk.com and burned that on to a CDR. After I do, neither cd will boot the system. I get a "no bootable device selected" message. BIOS is set for CD boot.
Will I have to find a Dell resource cd somewhere or is there a download available that I can burn onto a disk?
Not sure if this file will give you anything better to work with but here is one from Dell
diagft32.exe
You may want to try booting the system to this disk in floppy form and copy the information to the hard drive. Then you should be able to boot the system to the hard drive then have access to the CD Rom so that you can install from the CD. This file contains CD Rom drivers that others do not normally have.
Again, I appreciate your recommendation. Unfortunately, it didn't work either. I copied DIAGFT32.EXE to C: It will not run in DOS mode and will not boot the system as a floppy.
Should I just be resigned to the fact that I will not be able to install win95 without a resource disk for this laptop? If that is the case, would I be able to install a win98 disk - it's supposed to be bootable right?
Yes this system will accept windows 98 and you can get drivers for the components installed in this system for windows 98 from the Dell download site accessible from the link at the top of this screen.
