Windows Update - same update reappears

I have a Dell D820 running XP Pro.
I have Automatic Updates turned on.
I get the yellow shield with the exclamation mark appearing in the systray to tell me that I have "Updates are ready for your computer. Click here to install these updates.".
I click and perform the Express update.
The yellow shield goes away... for a while.
The yellow shield reappears again and again and again.

Knowing that even Microsoft couldn't be releasing that many updates I checked the advanced update install and have found that the automatic update keeps trying to install the "MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (925672)".  For some reason it mustn't be installing OK - even though no errors appear to occur.

I have tried to manually apply this update via windowsupdate.microsoft.com .  It shows as SUCCESSFUL in the browser after instalation BUT STILL the yellow shield reappears later to try and install it again.

Apart from this - I generally like XP - but this little thing is giving me the sh1ts. Besides chucking XP and installing Linux, any solutions out there?

Go to Microsoft Support and download the fix and install it manually.  Sounds like the original install is corrupted so unistall it, reboot, and install the one you download.

i don't know if there is a "fix" for the problem.. i don't use windows automatic updates, but i saw the same problem on my mom's computer when i turned on windows automatic updates, on it.. i would just turn off windows automatic updates.. that will solve the problem.. you can go to the windows updates website for windows updates..

    Try this too

    Boot into Safe Mode
"Go to C:windows/system32 and find a folder called "CatRoot2" rename it "catRoot2old"

Then go to C: and find the folder "WUTemp" and rename it to "WUTempold"

Then reboot and run Windows Update.

Windows will create both of the above folders again "

Hi - thank you for the suggestions - this is how I've progressed:

I tried visiting the windows update website and doing the update from there.  The website gave feedback after the update that it had been successful.  A while later the automatic update popped up again.  No joy there.

I also tried downloading the individual update exe from the network admin section on the windows update site.  Installed it OK, but the automatic update popped up again.  No joy there.

I tried booting in safe mode, renaming the C:\windows\system32\catroot2 folder and rebooting.  There was no C:\WUtemp folder to rename.  After reboot the automatic update came back and asked to be downloaded and installed again.  I did that and the yellow shield went away... for a while... but reappeared again with the same symptoms.  No joy there.

I get the feeling that the update is actually being installed OK but whatever is doing the detecting (of whether things are up-to-date) is thinking that it needs another update.

Anyway, I really thought that last suggestion of deleting (renaming) those folders would work.  I might try it again but turn off automatic updates first so I can get them from the website.  Does it make a difference that I couldn't find a WUtemp folder?

    Regards,
    Dave

Renaming the folders is like creating a restore point, sort of.  You coud un-name them if you had to go back.
