xp security updates

i have had my computer for 3 years and did not know about microsoft security updates. i bought a copy of mcafee internet suite 2007 and tried to install it to no avail.  when i installed it, it would not let me access the internet. i tried using the disk and downloading from the mcafee website. no use.
i was then told by a friend that it may not install because i did not have all my updates. when i went onto the microsoft website i discovered i have 61 updates to download. i tried this and at the end after installing was told to restart my computer. i did this but the computer would not restart, it just kept recycling through the windows xp frontpage.
of the 61 downloads 1 would not install. xp service pack 3, it asks for a xp professional with frontpage disk,i do not have this. is this the problem? if not can anyone help? at the moment i am running the computer without any anti virus etc

"would not install. xp service pack 3,"

This is for Microsoft Office. If you use the "Custom" option in Windows update you can de-select this update and tell it to hide it. You will Need your Office cd to install this Office service pack, if you do not have it, just remove the SP3 from your updates as describes above.

Did you try  Start, Turn off computer.

Get free anti virus now, and update the definitions and run a full system scan.

Google 'Mcafee help forums' and create an account by registering with a user name and password. Find a forum that applies to your problem and ask your question - there are many helpful people who will assist you.
